Finding Knowledge

There are ways to learn how to play guitar other then lessons. I know that everyone learns differently, but this I feel is a good order to get good at guitar.
1. Get professional lessons are learn chords. Not power chords---regular chords.
2. Use those chords to start playing some of those boring simple songs everyone has to learn.
3. Play around-learn. Get used to the guitar
4. Once you have chords down for sure, see professional help again for power chords.
5. Learn to play these power chords, how they work, and start understanding tablature.
6. Play around more and impress your friends and your family with your success.

I also strongly recommend playing guitar with someone else who already knows how to play. Not just to use them as a teacher directly, but to watch them and learn how they do things. This is how I learnt how to play by watching and mimmicking licks and songs someone was playing on guitar.

Some more random tips for success.
-Play with someone
-Look at guitar tablature websites. They will provides you with 'tabs' for those who are not good at playing by ear.
-Watch Videos on the Net- Youtube.com is a GREAT site for guitar learning from people that know what they are talking about.
-Never think you know it all. Guitar learning is endless. There is no way one person can know every trick out there.
-Stay positive-Do NOT give up. You will regret it if you do. For some people it takes longer then others. You will catch on!
-Ask Questions-

Good luck to all those learning. This is what I feel is the most self-satisfying and enjoyable hobbie there is.

Chord 'Emotions'

I want to talk about emotions in your chord progressions. What do I mean? I mean that your chord progressions are what can contribute to sad, fearful, happy, (etc) songs. Yes, just music alone can make you feel a certain emotion, but I am sure you already knew that. I want to show you a few chord progressions that can make you 'feel' a certain way.

Examples:

G/C/D/C/G. . . is a happy chord progression. There is many of many songs that use this chord progression. You would be amazed in how many of the common songs you know that tend to make you feel good actually use these chords.

If you wish to make your song a much more dreary and sad, play your chords slower and add a minor chord.
Here is how you can incorporate a minor chord in the key of G.
G/C/Em/D/G. . .
Play the chords slower by either strumming slower or picking out the individual notes in the chord.

Don't understand wrong, just because you have added a minor chord, that does not mean that the song has to be sad and dreary. There are again many songs that use minor chords with a happy tune. I am just giving you the reader ideas on how to make songs you are composing a more sad tune. It's really going to come out in how you feel at the time you are writting the song. You will find that it is very difficult to write sad songs when you are happy and happy songs when you are feeling sad. Write songs about how you feel at the time, because these are the best songs that get written.

The emotion of song does not come from one single character, but a number of things such as speed of play, chord progressions as discussed, and lyrics. Even the tone of voice effects your songs inner emotions.

Best Guitar Player of All Time

Who do you think is the best guitar player of all time? I have not given this much thought but the first name that pops in my mind is Eddie Van Halen. If you disagree with me...have you heard the intro to Eruption? He is so good. However I know that there are a lot of bands and very good guitar players out there and I was wondering who you feel is the best. Reply to this message and let me know!
